The Balvenie 12 Year Old DoubleWood is a landmark in Scotch history. Launched in 1993, it was the first major commercial release to utilize "wood finishing"—a technique pioneered by Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE. This process of secondary maturation remains the gold standard for the Speyside category.

The Wood Finishing Process

The DoubleWood gains its distinct character from two separate cask types, followed by a crucial "marriage" period that integrates the competing flavors into a seamless whole.

  • Aged 12 Years: Maturation in traditional American oak ex-bourbon casks for a foundation of vanilla and honey.
  • Finished 9 Months: Secondary aging in first-fill European oak Oloroso sherry casks for added depth and fruit.
  • The Marriage: Rested in large oak tuns for 3–4 months to allow the different cask influences to harmonize.
Sensory Profile

Nose: Honey, vanilla, and sweet orchard fruit. Subtle Oloroso notes of dried fig and raisin layer in beautifully with air.

Palate: Smooth and medium-bodied. Nutty sweetness leads, followed by cinnamon, milk chocolate, and dried fruit.

Finish: Medium and warming with a lingering vanilla sweetness and refined oak spice.
