Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne 2022 represents the absolute zenith of white Burgundy. Historically committed to a Grand Cru-only portfolio, the estate manages a 23.5-acre contiguous parcel on the west-facing slope of the Corton hill—the largest single holding in the appellation. With a heritage dating back to Charlemagne in 775 CE, this domaine remains a benchmark for technical precision and biodynamic purity.

The Grand Cru Benchmark

The 2022 vintage was warm and concentrated, producing a Chardonnay of immense structural depth. Following 12 months in French oak, the wine integrated for an additional six months in stainless steel, sandstone amphora, and large-format oak.

  • Terroir Assembly: Composed parcel-by-parcel from the forest-edge top of the hill to the mineral-rich base.
  • Critical Standing: Scored 97 points by Wine Advocate; characterized as rivaling the legendary 2020 as the finest recent release.
  • Production: Bottled in May 2024; a masterclass in "mid-palate plenitude" and flinty, Grand Cru minerality.
Sensory Profile

Nose: Sweet stone fruit and orchard fruit. Iodine, freshly baked bread, and vanilla pod develop with air, layered over hay and beeswax.

Palate: Full-bodied and satiny. Citrus and nectarine lead into a mid-palate of immense concentration, framed by a chalky, mineral extract.

Finish: Thrillingly long and resonant. Dense fruit weight concludes with a characteristic closing note of flint and mineral salts.

The Peerage

Within Corton-Charlemagne, Bonneau du Martray stands alongside Coche-Dury and Domaine Leflaive. Its single-parcel nature ensures a continuous expression of the climat rather than a négociant-style blend.

"Arguably the most consistent expression of the Corton-Charlemagne climat."

Collector Notes

The 2022 vintage is a cornerstone acquisition for serious Burgundy cellars. Given the majority stake acquisition by Stan Kroenke (Screaming Eagle) in 2017, the estate’s global demand has intensified. This release is built for long-term aging, with a drinking window extending through 2042. Every bottle offered is verified for pristine label condition and original carton provenance. High-conviction target for enthusiasts of white Grand Cru Burgundy.

Recommended Serving

Decant for 30–60 minutes to allow the iodine and flint nuances to emerge. Best served at 52–56°F in a Burgundy glass. Pairs flawlessly with butter-poached lobster, roasted scallops, or aged Comté. Current drinking will improve substantially with 3 to 5 additional years of bottle age.
