The Last Drop Release No. 38 is a 55 year old single malt Scotch whisky from the Tomintoul Distillery, distilled in April 1969 and bottled at 43.1% ABV (86.2 proof). Three casks were married together in 2022 and finished in a fresh ex-Matusalem sherry butt for two further years. The bottle is 700 mL and comes with a 50 mL companion miniature.

Nº 01

The Elemental Distinction

01

Distilled in April 1969 — a dated month, not an approximate year, which is unusual on a whisky this old.

02

Fifty-five years in wood, and the last two of them in a fresh ex-Matusalem butt: a sherry finish laid over a decades-long sherry maturation.

03

Three casks married into one, creating a composed vatting from a single distillery and a single month rather than a single-cask lottery.

04

Bottled at 43.1% ABV, sitting comfortably above the legal floor without being heavily reduced.

05

A named distillery on the label — contrasting with Release No. 26, the 1950 cognac from the same house.

06

Supplied with a 50 mL companion miniature, allowing the main decanter to remain sealed while tasting.

Tomintoul & Last Drop Heritage

April 1969 Speyside Distillation

Tomintoul is a Speyside distillery at Ballindalloch, working since the mid-1960s and owned by Angus Dundee Distillers since 2000. Much of its historical output was allocated to blenders, making very old single-cask or small-batch releases exceptionally rare. Distilled in April 1969, these three casks rested untouched for over five decades before being brought together by The Last Drop Distillers for their 2025 Collection.

Ex-Sherry & Refill Hogsheads

Three original casks filled in April 1969 matured quietly in Speyside for 53 years, establishing deep stone-fruit complexity.

Two-Year Finishing Cask

Fresh Ex-Matusalem Sherry Butt

Married in 2022 and finished for two years in a fresh ex-Matusalem Oloroso sherry butt, layering rich nuts and sweet spice.

Cask Vatting Artistry

Composed Three-Cask Batch

Vatted by master blender Colin Scott to achieve perfect equilibrium between ancient oak tannins and vibrant fruit notes.

Sensory Profile & Strategy

Master Blender Notes
I

Sensory Profile

Colour: Deep amber carrying a dusky pink cast.
Nose: Opulent red fruits and ripe peach, lifted by toasted nuts and creamy toffee.
Palate: Stone fruits with cinnamon and nutmeg behind them. Descriptors follow official notes recorded by Colin Scott, master blender at The Last Drop Distillers.

II

Strategic Position

Fifty-five years puts this among the oldest Scotch single malts in the half-century Scotch shelf at Midnight Whiskey — four years older than the Bowmore 1971 and representing an ultra-rare expression from Tomintoul Distillery.

Collector Note & Index

Vault Provenance

The Bottle Count Integrity

The label on this bottle reads 403. The Last Drop's initial launch announcement for the 2025 Collection mentioned 430 prior to bottling completion. We quote what is printed on the physical bottle label and disclose both figures for total transparency.

Sealed Decanter Preservation

The included 50 mL miniature allows collectors to experience the 1969 liquid without opening the primary 700 mL hand-numbered decanter, preserving full secondary market provenance.

Evaluated strictly on verified liquid specifications, physical inspects, and primary bottler disclosures.

Production Methodology

Tomintoul is a Speyside distillery at Ballindalloch, working since the mid-1960s and owned by Angus Dundee Distillers since 2000; much of its output has historically gone to blending, which is part of why very old single-cask Tomintoul is uncommon. This whisky was distilled in April 1969 and filled into ex-sherry butts and refill sherry hogsheads, where it stayed for more than five decades. In 2022 The Last Drop married three of those casks together and re-filled the result into a fresh ex-Matusalem sherry butt — Matusalem being a very old sweet Oloroso from Jerez — for a further two years before bottling at 43.1%. The sequencing is worth reading carefully: this is a sherry finish laid over a sherry maturation, so the final cask is adjusting a character it shares rather than imposing a new one. The Last Drop describes Release No. 38 as the sister cask to Release No. 36 from its 2024 Collection; they are related whiskies, not the same one, and nothing stated about either describes the other. The Last Drop Distillers has been part of the Sazerac Company since 2016.

Authentication & Vault Preservation

Every bottle sold through Midnight Whiskey is sourced as an authentic, sealed product and inspected before it ships. Orders are packed with padded, glass-rated handling and require an adult signature (21+) on delivery; we do not ship to anyone unable to verify legal drinking age. For our full sourcing and handling protocols, see our editorial and authentication standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What proof is The Last Drop Release No. 38?

The Last Drop Release No. 38 is bottled at 43.1% ABV, which is 86.2 US proof. The figure is printed on the label and stated by The Last Drop. It is a 55 year old single malt Scotch from the Tomintoul Distillery, distilled in April 1969.

What is an ex-Matusalem sherry butt?

Matusalem is a very old sweet Oloroso sherry from the Jerez region, and an ex-Matusalem butt is a large sherry cask that previously held it. The Last Drop married three casks of Tomintoul single malt into a fresh ex-Matusalem butt in 2022 and left the whisky there for a further two years before bottling, so the finish is the last stage of a maturation that began in 1969, not the whole of it.

What is the difference between The Last Drop Release No. 38 and Release No. 36?

They are sister casks, not the same whisky. Release No. 36 appeared in The Last Drop's 2024 Collection and was the company's oldest single malt release at that point. Release No. 38 followed in the 2025 Collection as a 55 year old Tomintoul distilled in April 1969 and finished in an ex-Matusalem sherry butt. Specifications from one do not describe the other.
