Old Rip Van Winkle 25 Year is the oldest release the Van Winkle family has bottled: 11 barrels distilled in the spring and fall of 1989 at the family's Shively, Kentucky distillery, moved to Buffalo Trace in 2002, and emptied into stainless steel tanks in 2014 to stop the wood. It was bottled in 2017 at 100 proof (50% ABV), and the 11 barrels yielded 710 bottles. Each is a Glencairn Crystal Studio decanter, engraved and numbered, in a wooden case whose lid is built from the staves of those same barrels.

Stitzel-Weller & Van Winkle Heritage

1989 Shively Distillation Historic Milestone

Distilled at the historic Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Shively, Kentucky under Julian Van Winkle Jr.'s lineage, this 1989 wheated distillate represents the pinnacle of Van Winkle family history. Matured for thirteen years at Shively and twelve years at Buffalo Trace before stainless steel tanking in 2014, it stands as an irreplaceable artifact from Kentucky's golden age of wheated bourbon.

Sensory Profile & Strategy

Reviewer Consensus Tasting Notes
I

Sensory Profile

Nose: Oak leading, with caramel, vanilla and dried fruit behind it.
Palate: Oak-forward but not woody — the wheated sweetness holds its ground, with leather and dark fruit.
Finish: Long, oak and caramel together.

† Buffalo Trace published no tasting notes with this release. The profile above is the consensus of independent published reviews.

II

Strategic Position

Two things separate this from everything else wearing the family name. It is older than any Van Winkle bottling before or since, and it is documented Shively distillate — whiskey made before the Buffalo Trace joint venture existed, which the standing lineup no longer is. Set against the 23-year, the line's standing apex, and against the 10-year that carries the same Old Rip Van Winkle name, it is the endpoint of the range rather than a step in it. Records & Assurance

Production Methodology

The whiskey was distilled in the spring and fall of 1989 to the Van Winkle wheated mash bill, wheat standing in for rye alongside corn and malted barley; Buffalo Trace does not publish the ratio, and no figure is asserted here. Eleven barrels were laid down on the lower levels of a metal-clad warehouse built in 1935 at the family distillery in Shively, Kentucky, where cooler, steadier conditions slow the wood. In 2002, when the Van Winkle family entered its joint venture with Buffalo Trace, the barrels moved roughly sixty miles east to Frankfort and continued for another twelve years on the lower floors of Buffalo Trace's brick warehouses. In 2014, at twenty-five years in wood, the team dumped the barrels into stainless steel tanks to halt the aging and hold the profile; the whiskey stayed in steel until it was bottled in 2017 at 100 proof. The eleven barrels produced 710 bottles, which began shipping in April of that year.
