Editorial Standards & Verification

Our Commitment to Authenticity & Accuracy

At Midnight Whiskey, we understand that collecting ultra-premium spirits is built on a foundation of trust. Every bottle we list—from daily drinkers to "Unicorn" releases—undergoes a rigorous verification process. This page outlines the standards we use to ensure our data, our reviews, and our bottles are the gold standard of the industry.

1. The "Vault-Verified" Authentication Protocol

Every high-value bottle (Tier 1 & Tier 2) is physically inspected by our specialists before being listed. Our 8-point inspection includes:

  • Seal Integrity: Verification of the tax strip, plastic shrink-wrap, or wax seal for signs of tampering or heat-reapplication.

  • Laser Code Tracking: Cross-referencing bottle laser codes with distillery production timelines to ensure the glass matches the liquid.

  • Fill Level Analysis: Assessing the "angel's share" against the bottle’s age to ensure the vacuum seal remains intact.

  • Micro-Printing & Foil Check: Using high-magnification tools to verify label holographic elements and ink-layering common in authentic high-end releases.

  • Provenance Review: We only source from vetted private collections, reputable auction houses, and authorized distributors.

2. Fact-Checking & Data Integrity

We don’t rely on marketing fluff. Our product descriptions are built using a 6-Step Verification Workflow:

  • Primary Sources Only: We prioritize official distillery technical sheets, TTB (Tax and Trade Bureau) filings, and direct statements from Master Distillers.

  • Market Data: Pricing ranges are updated every 90 days based on realized auction results and global retail averages to provide a realistic "Fair Market Value."

  • Historical Accuracy: We verify "closed distillery" claims (like Stitzel-Weller or Port Ellen) against corporate archival records to ensure you know exactly where your whiskey was distilled.

3. Tasting & Evaluation Standards

When we provide tasting notes, they are generated through controlled environments:

  • Glassware: Standard Glencairn or ISO tasting glasses.

  • Resting Period: Spirits are rested for at least one minute per year of age before evaluation.

  • The Palate: Notes are compiled by a panel to avoid individual bias, focusing on structure, ABV integration, and finish duration.

4. Independence & Ethics

Midnight Whiskey maintains total editorial independence. We do not accept payment from distilleries to "rank" products higher. If a bottle is a "Staff Pick," it is because it earned its place through quality, rarity, or value—not a sponsorship.
