Dailuaine was founded in 1851 by William Mackenzie near Carron in Speyside, with production beginning the following year, and it stands between the River Spey and Ben Rinnes, the tallest hill in the region. The name comes from the Gaelic for "the green vale". Most of what the distillery produces goes to blending, which is why official single malt bottlings under its own name are infrequent. This release was matured for its full twenty-one years in Spanish oak ex-sherry casks — not bourbon-matured with a sherry period added at the end, but sherry wood from filling to bottling, which is what the producer means by matured life-long. It was bottled at its natural cask strength of 54.3% with no chill filtration and no added colour, as the distillery's contribution to Diageo's Special Releases 2025 collection, titled Horizons Unbound, and it is the first Dailuaine released at this age and in this cask style.

Why is Dailuaine single malt so rarely bottled on its own?

Because most of what Dailuaine makes goes into blends rather than into bottles bearing its own name. That is true of a large share of Speyside distilleries, and it means official single malt releases from Dailuaine are occasional rather than continuous. When one appears at 21 years and full sherry maturation, it is showing a side of the distillery that its blending role usually keeps out of view.

What does matured life-long in Spanish oak mean?

It means the whisky spent its entire 21 years in ex-sherry casks made from Spanish oak, rather than being matured in bourbon barrels and moved into sherry wood for a short finish at the end. Full-term sherry maturation builds the dried fruit, spice and dark chocolate character through the whole spirit instead of laying it over the top, which is why a life-long sherry malt reads differently from a sherry-finished one of the same age.
