Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Four Grain is a structural anomaly in the Buffalo Trace portfolio. Distilled in 2005 and aged for 12 years, this expression utilizes a unique mash bill of corn, rye, wheat, and malted barley. By marrying the spicy tension of rye with the velvety softness of wheat, it reconstructs the grain varieties Taylor himself would have utilized in late-1800s Kentucky.

The Technical Marriage

Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley designed this recipe to test the interaction between Buffalo Trace’s primary flavoring grains, resulting in a Bottled-in-Bond release of immense aromatic breadth.

  • Historic Profile: A 12-year-old Bottled-in-Bond bourbon that represents the tenth major release in the Taylor lineup.
  • Dual-Grain Tension: Uses both rye and wheat as flavoring grains—a rare practice that balances peppery spice against a creamy, buttery core.
  • 2017/2018 Vintage: Released in two strictly limited waves drawn from sister barrels filled in the 2005 distillation season.
Sensory Profile

Nose: Caramel, vanilla, and clove. Strawberry and floral notes develop with air, alongside caramel corn and a faint, cooling mint.

Palate: Medium-bodied and complex. Sweet vanilla and creamy butter transition into a mid-palate where rye spice and wheat softness work in perfect tension.

Finish: Medium-long and poised. Oak grip and lingering rye spice conclude with a clean, chocolate-weight sweetness.

The Four-Grain Standard

While many craft producers have experimented with four-grain recipes, the Taylor expression is considered the category's technical reference point. It is the only Taylor release to utilize this complex grain architecture.

"A structural masterpiece where rye spice meets wheated elegance."

Collector Notes

The E.H. Taylor Four Grain occupies a unique position for vertical collectors as the only release to span two consecutive years (2017-2018) rather than a single production run. Despite this, supply remains extremely finite, as both releases were drawn from the same 2005 distillation. Every bottle offered here is verified for original seal integrity and includes the signature mustard-yellow display tube. Given its status as the only four-grain expression in the Buffalo Trace catalog, it remains a mandatory foundational asset for serious bourbon collections.

Recommended Serving

This complex bourbon is best appreciated neat in a Glencairn glass. A few drops of limestone water are recommended to broaden the strawberry and floral aromatic notes. At its 100-proof strength, it holds up beautifully over a single large cube, but its technical complexity is best served neat and at room temperature.
