Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Warehouse C Tornado Surviving is one of the most narratively legendary spirits in bourbon history. Born from the aftermath of an April 2, 2006 tornado that tore through Buffalo Trace’s Frankfort property, this release commemorates 100 barrels that survived direct exposure to the Kentucky elements. For months, these barrels sat on the top two rows of the 1881-built Warehouse C, exposed to torrential rain and the blistering summer sun, resulting in an unparalleled concentration of flavor.

The Elemental Distinction

Selected from the barrels that received the most direct climate exposure during the warehouse repair, this 2011 release features an accelerated maturation profile that cannot be replicated.

  • Unmediated Aging: The absence of the warehouse roof forced deep spirit-wood interaction, creating a density and color far beyond its 9-12 year age range.
  • Mash Bill Distinction: Unlike the standard Taylor line, the Tornado Surviving release utilizes the rye-heavy Buffalo Trace Mash Bill #2.
  • Finite Selection: A singular vatting of only 100 barrels—representing the "salvage" of one of Kentucky's most historic aging structures.
Sensory Profile

Nose: Deep citrus and spicy rye. Fragrant oak notes are layered with dried fig, clove, and brown sugar, underpinned by leather and faint smoke.

Palate: Full-bodied and intensely concentrated. Jam-like fruit and crème brûlée transition into bold rye spice, oak tannin, and rich vanilla.

Finish: Exceptionally long and resonant. Closing notes of toasted nuts and butterscotch with a sophisticated, weather-tempered touch of smoke.

The Salvage Narrative

Tornado Surviving is often compared to Glenfiddich’s Snow Phoenix—a rare category of "salvage releases" where natural disaster dictates the maturation logic. It is widely considered the most narratively distinct bourbon of the 21st century.

"A technical masterpiece born from elemental chaos."

Collector Notes

The "Tornado" is the undisputed "unicorn" of the Colonel E.H. Taylor portfolio. As one of the two inaugural limited editions from 2011, its scarcity is absolute. The combination of the finite 100-barrel outturn, the use of the rye-heavy Mash Bill #2, and the historic "tornado damaged" provenance drives the highest secondary market premiums in the Taylor lineup. Every bottle offered here is verified for pristine label integrity and includes the original display tube. This is a foundational asset for any blue-chip American whiskey collection, representing a unique intersection of history, meteorology, and master-distilling salvage.

Recommended Serving

This historic salvage release is best enjoyed neat in a Glencairn glass at room temperature. The concentration gained from elemental exposure is most legible at full proof; however, a few drops of limestone water will broaden the jam-like fruit and spicy rye character. Due to its status as a piece of meteorological history, it is not appropriate for cocktails.
