Origin

NOLET'S Dry Gin, The Reserve, is a Dutch gin from the Nolet Distillery in Schiedam, Holland, distilling since 1691. It is built around saffron and verbena, bottled at 52.3% ABV (104.6 proof), individually numbered by hand and released by annual allocation. It is the personal creation of Carolus Nolet Sr., the tenth-generation owner.

Nº 01

The Elemental Distinction

01

Saffron as a lead botanical, which almost nothing else does — it is the most expensive spice in the world and is harvested thread by thread from the crocus flower.

02

Verbena beside it for a light citrus lift, so the pair sits in front of the juniper rather than behind it.

03

52.3% ABV, which is well above mixing strength and is the reason this is poured into a glass rather than a cocktail.

04

Every batch tasted and approved personally by tenth-generation owner Carolus Nolet Sr. before it is bottled.

05

Hand-numbered bottles, released by annual allocation rather than made to continuous demand.

06

From a distillery that has been working in Schiedam since 1691 — the town where Dutch gin history began.

Nolet Distillery & Schiedam Heritage

1691 Dutch Distilling Legacy

The Nolet Distillery has operated in Schiedam since 1691, in the Dutch town where gin originates, and remains wholly in family hands. The Reserve is the personal project of Carolus Nolet Sr., the tenth-generation owner, created to showcase ultra-rare botanicals anchored by artisanal copper pot still distillation.

Artisanal Pot Still Extraction
Lead Botanical

Saffron (Crocus Sativus)

Hand-harvested crocus saffron threads impart a warm, golden hue, luxurious floral aromatics, and deep spice complexity.

Citrus Lift

Lemon Verbena

Delivers bright, lifted botanical citrus notes that balance saffron's warm, earthy depth without heavy pine sharpness.

High Proof Pot Still

52.3% ABV / 104.6 Proof

Sensory Profile & Strategy

Carolus Nolet Sr. Tasting Notes
I

Sensory Profile

Colour: Faintly golden pale amber rather than water-clear.
Nose: Warm saffron upfront, floral verbena lift, bright citrus zest, and subtle background juniper.
Palate: Luxuriously spiced and rounded, with verbena citrus running through and delicate saffron warmth.

II

Strategic Position

Gin is not usually collected, because it is rarely made as a sipping spirit. This bottle inverts almost every assumption: allocated annually, hand-numbered, bottled at 104.6 proof, and built on saffron. It holds a distinct position on the sipping gin shelf in Midnight Whiskey's vault.

Vault Provenance

Why Schiedam Matters

Schiedam is where Dutch gin originates. The Nolet family has distilled there since 1691, inheriting an artisanal tradition that puts saffron and verbena forward rather than forcing a heavy London dry profile.

Hand-Numbered Allocation Inspection

Each bottle carries a handwritten bottle number on the front panel and a substantial gold closure cap. Every unit undergoes full intake inspection for seal integrity and gift box preservation.

Evaluated strictly on verified liquid specifications, physical inspects, and primary distillery disclosures.

Production Methodology

The Nolet Distillery has operated in Schiedam since 1691, in the Dutch town where gin originates, and remains in family hands. The Reserve is the personal project of Carolus Nolet Sr., the tenth-generation owner, and is built around two named botanicals: saffron, cultivated by hand from the threads inside the crocus flower and the most expensive spice in the world by weight, and verbena, which brings a delicate citrus quality. Other botanicals are used and the distillery does not publish them, so the recipe is only partly known by design. Botanicals in this style of production are distilled or macerated separately and combined afterwards, allowing full control over each contribution. The gin is bottled at 52.3% ABV — considerably above standard gin strength, consistent with a spirit meant to be drunk neat. Carolus Sr. tastes and approves every batch before bottling, bottles are numbered by hand, and release is by annual allocation.

Authentication & Vault Preservation

Every bottle sold through Midnight Whiskey is sourced as an authentic, sealed product and inspected before it ships. Orders are packed with padded, glass-rated handling and require an adult signature (21+) on delivery; we do not ship to anyone unable to verify legal drinking age. For our full sourcing and handling protocols, see our editorial and authentication standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What botanicals are in NOLET'S Reserve gin?

NOLET'S names two: saffron, harvested by hand from the crocus flower and the most expensive spice in the world, and verbena, which contributes a light citrus character. Other botanicals are used but the distillery has not published them. That balance is deliberate — the Reserve is built so that saffron and verbena sit in front of the juniper rather than behind it, which is unusual for a dry gin.

Is NOLET'S Reserve gin meant to be sipped or mixed?

It is made as a sipping gin. NOLET'S bottles it at 52.3% ABV, well above the strength of a mixing gin, and describes it as intended for savouring rather than for cocktails. The saffron and verbena that define it are the first things a strong mixer will cover, so a tonic or a vermouth works against the reason to own the bottle.

Who makes NOLET'S gin?

The Nolet Distillery in Schiedam, Holland, which has been distilling since 1691 and is still owned by the Nolet family. The Reserve is the personal creation of Carolus Nolet Sr., the tenth-generation owner, who tastes and approves each batch before bottling. The same family created Ketel One vodka, which is the name most people recognise first.
