BenRiach 1994 Cask Edition, cask number 2067, is a 29 year old Speyside single malt Scotch whisky distilled on 18th July 1994, matured in a single Oloroso puncheon and bottled in 2024 at its natural cask strength of 55.1% ABV (110.2 proof), without chill filtration or added colour. It is made from BenRiach's smoky, peated spirit and was selected by Master Blender Rachel Barrie. The bottle is 700 mL.

Nº 01

The Elemental Distinction

01

One Oloroso puncheon, start to finish. Nothing was married in, so what is in the bottle is what a single barrel made over twenty-nine years.

02

55.1% ABV — natural cask strength, non-chill filtered, no added colour. Nothing about this bottling was adjusted to a target.

03

Chosen personally by the distillery's Master Blender rather than drawn to a specification, and signed by her.

04

Peated spirit, filled on 18th July 1994 — the label reads SMOKY, and BenRiach is one of very few Speyside distilleries making a peated make at all.

05

Hand-numbered, with the cask number printed on the label — this bottle is directly traceable to its barrel.

06

No selecting partner is named on the label, so this is a distillery release rather than a market exclusive — unlike many of its siblings.

07

Its closest comparison is cask 2221, the Pedro Ximenez sibling filled a month earlier — same spirit, same summer, same age, different wood.

BenRiach Distillery & Elgin Heritage

1898 Speyside Craftsmanship

BenRiach was founded in 1898 near Elgin in Speyside and stands out for producing both peated and unpeated single malts on the same site, along with annual triple-distilled runs. The house distillation style is deliberately slow, using a long heart cut of the run to capture signature orchard-fruit esters that mature gracefully over decades in wood.

Craftsmanship & Cask Architecture

Single Barrel Unadulterated Expression
29-Year Single Cask

Oloroso Sherry Puncheon

Aged continuously for 29 full years in a single Oloroso puncheon, developing deep dried fruit, warm spice, and golden amber tone.

Unfiltered Cask Strength

55.1% ABV / 110.2 Proof

Bottled at natural cask strength without chill filtration or artificial caramel colouring, preserving full oil richness and texture.

Master Blender Selection

Rachel Barrie Authorship

Personally selected from BenRiach's eclectic cask collection by Master Blender Rachel Barrie, whose signature appears on the front panel.

Sensory Profile & Strategy

Single Cask Authenticity
I

Sensory Profile

Colour: A bright golden amber in the bottle — notably paler than a Pedro Ximénez sibling from this vintage, reflecting pure Oloroso puncheon influence.
Palate: Core BenRiach peated, slow-run Speyside spirit, deeply integrated with 29 years of Oloroso sherry oak maturation.
Finish: Long, warming, and expressive of natural 110.2 proof intensity and unchill-filtered texture.

II

Strategic Position

Twenty-nine-year-old single casks are bought on provenance rather than on a house style, because one barrel decides everything. That makes the cask number the most important identifier on the label. It sits alongside The GlenDronach 30, the other Rachel Barrie bottling here, among the single-cask Speyside malts in our vault.

Collector Note & Index

Vault Provenance

Why One Cask Is Not Like Another

Documented 1994 Cask Editions range across Pedro Ximénez, Oloroso, Tokaji, and virgin oak barrels, with strengths from 52.6% to 56.3%. Cask 2061 was filled on the same day into Oloroso and bottled at 28y / 52.6%, whereas Cask 2067 aged an extra year to 29y / 55.1% ABV.

Front Panel Verification

The label carries vintage (1994), cask type (Oloroso Puncheon), spirit style (Smoky), cask number (2067), distillation date (18th July 1994), bottling year (2024), age (29y), handwritten bottle number, and Rachel Barrie's signature.

Evaluated strictly on verified liquid specifications, physical inspects, and primary distillery disclosures.

Production Methodology

BenRiach was founded in 1898 near Elgin in Speyside and is one of very few distilleries in the region producing both peated and unpeated spirit on the same site; it also runs a triple-distilled batch once a year. The house distillation is deliberately slow, taking a long heart of the run to capture esters, which is where the fruit-forward character of the spirit comes from. The Cask Edition series bottles that spirit one barrel at a time: Master Blender Rachel Barrie selects individual casks from the distillery's collection, and each is bottled at its natural strength with no chill filtration and no added colour, then hand-numbered with the cask number printed on the label. This bottling is cask 2067: peated spirit filled on 18th July 1994 into a single Oloroso puncheon, bottled in 2024 at twenty-nine years and 55.1% ABV, with no selecting partner named on the label.

Authentication & Vault Preservation

Every bottle sold through Midnight Whiskey is sourced as an authentic, sealed product and inspected before it ships. Orders are packed with padded, glass-rated handling and require an adult signature (21+) on delivery; we do not ship to anyone unable to verify legal drinking age. For our full sourcing and handling protocols, see our editorial and authentication standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a BenRiach Cask Edition?

Cask Edition is BenRiach's single-cask series: each bottling is drawn from one cask chosen by Master Blender Rachel Barrie from the distillery's cask collection, then bottled at natural cask strength without chill filtration or added colour. Bottles are hand-numbered and the label carries the cask number, the vintage, the bottling year and the age. Releases are made one cask at a time and are often sold in a single market.

Is BenRiach peated or unpeated?

Both. BenRiach is one of very few Speyside distilleries that produces peated and unpeated spirit at the same site, and it also runs a triple-distilled batch once a year. That means the style of any given Cask Edition depends on the cask rather than on the distillery, and the label states it — so two BenRiach bottlings of the same age can be smoky or not smoky.

Do two BenRiach Cask Editions from the same year taste the same?

No, and the differences are large. Among the documented 1994 Cask Editions, one was aged in a Pedro Ximenez puncheon, another in an Oloroso puncheon, another in a Tokaji hogshead and another in virgin oak, with bottling strengths ranging from about 52.6% to 56.3% and outturns from 211 bottles to 656. Because each release is one cask, the vintage tells you when the spirit was made and almost nothing about how it tastes.
