Ardbeg 25 Years Old is an Islay single malt Scotch whisky from Ardbeg Distillery, fully matured in ex-bourbon casks and bottled non chill-filtered. It joined the distillery's core range in 2021 as its oldest permanently age-stated whisky, drawn from casks filled during the years when Ardbeg was barely distilling at all.

Nº 01

The Elemental Distinction

01

Twenty-five years of Islay maturation that rounds the peat without removing it — smoke turned creamy rather than quiet.

02

Fully ex-bourbon matured, with no sherry or wine cask anywhere in it, which is unusual at this age and leaves the distillate exposed.

03

The casks come from the distillery's thinnest years, before it closed in 1991 — the supply was fixed decades ago by circumstance.

04

Part of the core range rather than a one-off, so it returns; that is not the same as being easy to find.

05

Non chill-filtered, preserving original texture, body, and heavy phenolic oils.

06

A gunmetal bottle in a sculpted silver cage — the only monochrome presentation package on these shelves.

Nº 02

Ardbeg & Port Ellen Heritage

1815 Islay Peat Tradition

Ardbeg was founded in 1815 on the southern coast of Islay and makes a heavily peated spirit known for tar, antiseptic, and fennel notes. This bottling is fully matured in ex-bourbon casks — no sherry, no wine, no finishing period — which at twenty-five years is a deliberate choice rather than a default, because a sherry cask would mask a great deal of what long maturation does to peat.

Nº 03

Craftsmanship & Cask Maturation

Pure Ex-Bourbon Evolution
25-Year Maturation

100% Ex-Bourbon Oak

Aged exclusively in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels, allowing the heavily peated Islay distillate to transform without wine oak interference.

Distillate Preservation

Non Chill-Filtered

Bottled without chill filtration to maintain full mouthfeel, natural oils, and lingering medicinal smoke character.

Rare Cask Era

Pre-1996 Distillation Stock

Drawn from a small reservoir of casks laid down during the distillery's near-closure years in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Presentation Caging

Gunmetal & Sculpted Tin

Encased in a custom gunmetal glass decanter resting within a bespoke, sculpted silver metal cage display.

Sensory Profile & Strategy

Islay Peat Profile
I

Sensory Profile

Nose: Smoked cream and peppermint over toffee, with Ardbeg's fennel and pine resin and a distant earthy bonfire.
Palate: Vibrant and peppery, opening into sherbet lemon, candied apple, and pear, with carbolic soap and tar underneath.
Finish: Long and mellow — cream, fudge, and a delicate antiseptic note. Descriptors follow the distillery's own.

II

Strategic Position

Old Islay whisky is usually sold on the peat surviving; this one is interesting for the opposite reason. Twenty-five years in ex-bourbon wood, with no sherry to hide behind, turns Ardbeg's tar and antiseptic into cream and lemon sherbet while leaving the shape of it recognisable. Set against Bowmore's 51 year old, the other Islay in the vault, it is the plainer-wooded of the two by design, and it sits among the peated Islay malts on our shelves as the case for restraint in cask selection.

Vault Provenance

Sculpted Cage Presentation Inspection

The caged tin is structural rather than decorative and is part of what was sold, so a bottle separated from it is a reduced set — check the cage is undented and the bottle seats properly.

Fill Size and Strength Verification

Two fills exist across international markets: 70 cl (46.2% ABV) for Europe/UK and 750 mL (46% ABV / 92 Proof) for the US market. Check the fill mark on the bottle supplied to confirm exact proof details.

Production Methodology

Ardbeg was founded in 1815 on the southern coast of Islay and makes a heavily peated spirit whose young expressions are known for tar, antiseptic and fennel. This bottling is fully matured in ex-bourbon casks — no sherry, no wine, no finishing period — which at twenty-five years is a deliberate choice rather than a default, because a sherry cask would mask a great deal of what long maturation does to peat. What it does is convert the sharper phenolic edges into cream, fudge and citrus sweetness while leaving the smoke structurally present, which is why the distillery's own notes still list earthy bonfire and tar alongside candied apple and lemon sherbet. The whisky is bottled without chill filtration, so it retains the oils that carry that texture. The casks themselves date from the distillery's most difficult period: production was minimal through the late 1980s, Ardbeg closed in 1991, and full operation resumed only after a change of ownership in 1997. The 25 Years Old joined the core range in 2021 as the oldest permanently age-stated whisky in the lineup.

Authentication & Vault Preservation

Every bottle sold through Midnight Whiskey is sourced as an authentic, sealed product and inspected before it ships. Orders are packed with padded, glass-rated handling and require an adult signature (21+) on delivery; we do not ship to anyone unable to verify legal drinking age. Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ardbeg 25 Year Old part of the core range or a one-off release?

It is part of the core range, added in 2021 as the oldest permanently age-stated Ardbeg, rather than a one-off. In practice it is as hard to find as a special release anyway, because the amount that can be bottled is fixed by how few casks were filled twenty-five years earlier. Being permanent means it returns; it does not mean it is easy to find.

Why is there so little Ardbeg 25 Year Old?

Because of when the whisky was made. Ardbeg was distilling very little through the late 1980s, closed in 1991, and did not return to full production until after it was bought in 1997. The casks old enough to fill a twenty-five-year-old today come from that thin period, so the supply was set decades ago and cannot be increased.

Does Ardbeg 25 Year Old still taste peaty?

Yes. Twenty-five years in wood softens and rounds peat rather than removing it, and the distillery's own notes for this bottling still describe smoked cream, tar and earthy bonfire alongside the sweeter lemon sherbet and fudge that the age brings. It reads as a gentler, creamier Ardbeg rather than an unpeated one.
