The Macallan Horizon is the distillery's collaboration with Bentley Motors, released in 2024 for The Macallan's two hundredth year after three years of joint development. Master Whisky Maker Kirsteen Campbell drew it from six first-fill sherry-seasoned oak butts selected at the estate, and it is bottled at 46.6% ABV (93.2 proof) — a figure chosen deliberately, nodding to the six casks, the six materials in the vessel, and the distillery's Six Pillars. The vessel lies horizontally rather than standing, with a 180-degree twist through glass, aluminium, copper, leather and wood.

The Elemental Distinction

01

Six first-fill sherry-seasoned oak butts, hand-selected from stocks maturing at the estate by Master Whisky Maker Kirsteen Campbell.

02

Bottled at 46.6% ABV (93.2 proof) — the number is deliberate, marking the six casks, the six materials and the distillery's Six Pillars.

03

The vessel is designed to lie horizontally with a 180-degree twist, breaking with the vertical shape every whisky bottle takes.

04

Six materials in the object: whisky, wood, copper, aluminium, leather and glass — including copper reclaimed from the distillery's decommissioned stills and an oak inlay cut from one of the six casks.

05

Released in 2024 for the distillery's two hundredth year, after a collaboration announced in 2021 and three years of development.

Sensory Profile & Strategy

Master Whisky Maker Tasting Notes
I

Sensory Profile

Nose: Resinous polished oak with plum and dark cherry, then fresh leather and a green, leafy lift underneath.
Palate: Toffee and ginger against charred pineapple, with dark chocolate and warm oak spice filling the middle.
Finish: Long and layered, rich oak holding after the fruit has gone.

II

Strategic Position

Drinks-and-cars collaborations usually amount to a badge on a box, and this one is unusual for how far into the object it goes: the copper in the frame came out of the distillery's own decommissioned stills, the oak inlay on the closure was cut from one of the six casks the whisky matured in, and the closure itself is shaped after a rotary dial from the car. Beside the sherry-matured Speyside from GlenAllachie, another Speyside built on first-fill sherry wood, the difference is that one sells on cask arithmetic and the other on design. our single malt shelf holds the wider malt shelf, and the rest of this distillery's shelf the rest of this distillery's bottles.

Records & Assurance

Production Methodology

The whisky was made the ordinary way and selected the hard way. Six first-fill sherry-seasoned oak butts were picked out of the estate's maturing stock, each contributing something the others did not, and combined without reference to an age — the distillery is explicit that its whisky makers choose on quality and flavour rather than to a number of years, which is why no age statement appears. Bottling strength was set at 46.6% to carry three references at once: the six casks, the six materials in the vessel, and the Six Pillars the distillery organises itself around. The copper in the frame is not decorative sourcing either; it came from stills the distillery decommissioned before opening its current building in 2019.

Authentication & Vault Preservation

Every bottle sold through Midnight Whiskey is sourced as an authentic, sealed product and inspected before it ships. Orders are packed with padded, glass-rated handling and require an adult signature (21+) on delivery; we do not ship to anyone unable to verify legal drinking age. For our full sourcing and handling protocols, see our editorial and authentication standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is The Macallan Horizon bottled at 46.6%?

The strength is a deliberate reference rather than a production outcome. It nods to the six casks the whisky was drawn from, the six materials used in the vessel, and the Six Pillars the distillery describes as its foundations.

What is The Macallan Horizon vessel made of?

Six materials, chosen to be integral to both partners: whisky, wood, copper, aluminium, leather and glass. The copper frame contains metal reclaimed from the distillery's decommissioned stills, the closure carries an oak inlay cut from one of the six maturation casks, and the whole sits horizontally with a 180-degree twist.

Does The Macallan Horizon carry an age statement?

No. The distillery states that its whisky makers select casks on quality and flavour rather than working to a fixed age, so this release is defined by its six first-fill sherry-seasoned casks instead of by years.
