Eagle Rare 30 is the oldest age-stated bourbon Buffalo Trace has released, bottled at 101 proof (50.5% ABV) and unveiled on 16 April 2026 for a May rollout. It spent thirty years in Warehouse P, the distillery's climate-controlled warehouse built to make American whiskey of this age survivable — Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley describes it as a way to slow evaporation and soften the wood extraction that usually turns thirty-year Kentucky bourbon dry. It is the second release from that warehouse, after Eagle Rare 25 in 2023, and arrives in a hand-blown crystal decanter wrapped in a gold-plated eagle's wing.

The Elemental Distinction

01

Thirty years old — the oldest age statement Buffalo Trace has put on a bourbon, by the distillery's own account.

02

Bottled at 101 proof (50.5% ABV), the strength the brand carries across the range including the 17-year.

03

Matured in Warehouse P, the distillery's climate-controlled warehouse for extended ageing; the second expression to come out of it after Eagle Rare 25 in 2023.

04

Presented in a hand-blown 750 ml crystal decanter wrapped in a hand-hammered gold-plated eagle's wing, with a sculpted glass eagle inside and a display box that opens on outstretched wings.

05

Unveiled 16 April 2026 and rolled out from May through Sazerac's distribution network; the first two public bottles went through a Bonhams auction that ran from 24 April to 8 May.

Buffalo Trace & Warehouse P Heritage

Industrial Innovation in Extended Aging

Distilled at Buffalo Trace Distillery along the Kentucky River in Frankfort, Eagle Rare represents the outer limits of Kentucky bourbon maturation. Developed within Warehouse P—the distillery's $20 million experimental aging sanctuary—this 30-year expression overcomes the traditional twenty-year ceiling of Kentucky rickhouse aging through strict climate and humidity modulation.

Craftsmanship & Cask Architecture

Three Decades of Controlled Wood Science
30-Year Extended Maturation

Warehouse P Microclimate

Aged three full decades under modulated airflow and temperature, slowing wood extraction to preserve fruit delicacy without over-tannic dryness.

Sensory Profile & Strategy

Master Distiller Tasting Notes
I

Sensory Profile

Nose: Baked cherry, brown sugar and caramel with honey behind, then a nutty turn into warm tobacco, integrated oak and a trace of smoke.
Palate: Broad and mouth-coating — sweet aged stone fruit and caramel carrying the weight rather than the wood.
Finish: Long and velvety, sweetness giving way to a gentle smokiness with the oak staying measured to the end.

II

Strategic Position

Kentucky is the hard place to age whiskey for thirty years: the swings that make bourbon fast also make it dry and astringent past two decades, which is why American thirty-year age statements have effectively not existed. Warehouse P is the distillery's answer, and this is the second bottle out of it — so the release reads as a proof of method as much as a product. It shares its 101 proof with the most recent Eagle Rare 17, which is the useful comparison. The Antique Collection seventeen sits in the Antique Collection shelf, and the wider bourbon holdings in our bourbon collection.

Production Methodology

Warehouse P is the point of this bottle. Kentucky's temperature swings drive whiskey in and out of the staves, which is what makes bourbon mature quickly and what makes it fall apart past twenty years or so — evaporation climbs, extraction intensifies, and the result turns dry. Buffalo Trace built a climate-controlled warehouse to manage both, and Harlen Wheatley has described the aim as softening the extraction while keeping the nuance that ultra-aged bourbon can carry. Eagle Rare 25 came out of it in 2023; this is the second, three decades in, and the distillery has framed it as completing the range rather than opening a new tier.

Authentication & Vault Preservation

Every bottle sold through Midnight Whiskey is sourced as an authentic, sealed product and inspected before it ships. Orders are packed with padded, glass-rated handling and require an adult signature (21+) on delivery; we do not ship to anyone unable to verify legal drinking age. For our full sourcing and handling protocols, see our editorial and authentication standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Warehouse P at Buffalo Trace?

Warehouse P is the distillery's climate-controlled warehouse, dedicated to whiskey aged well beyond the usual Kentucky span. Controlling the temperature slows evaporation and softens wood extraction, which is what makes a thirty-year bourbon possible without it turning dry. Eagle Rare 30 is the second release from it, after Eagle Rare 25.

Is Eagle Rare 30 the oldest bourbon Buffalo Trace has released?

It is the oldest age-stated bourbon the distillery has released to date, by its own description. Buffalo Trace unveiled it on 16 April 2026 with a rollout beginning that May.

How does Eagle Rare 30 differ from Eagle Rare 17?

Age and warehouse, mostly. Eagle Rare 17 is part of the annual Buffalo Trace Antique Collection and comes from conventional warehousing; Eagle Rare 30 spent thirty years in the climate-controlled Warehouse P. Both are bottled at 101 proof.
