Global Outturn

The Glenrothes 42 comes from four casks filled in 1980 and left on the distillery estate for forty-two years, then selected and married by Master Whisky Maker Laura Rampling. It was released in March 2023 at 43% ABV (86 proof) in natural colour, and 1,134 bottles went out worldwide — the first whisky of this age the distillery had put its own name to. The oak is sherry-seasoned, from Jerez.

The Elemental Distinction

01

Four casks, filled in 1980 and married after forty-two years; the whisky spent its whole life on the distillery estate.

02

Selected by Master Whisky Maker Laura Rampling, who described the assembly as part science and part alchemy.

03

1,134 bottles released worldwide in March 2023 — the first release at this age to carry the distillery's own name.

04

Bottled at 43% ABV (86 proof) in natural colour; the deep amber is four decades of oak rather than caramel.

05

Sherry-seasoned oak from Jerez, with refill wood in the make-up — accounts of the exact cask arrangement differ between sources.

The Glenrothes & Speyside Heritage

Rothes Estate Maturation

Established in 1879 in the town of Rothes, The Glenrothes distillery relies on slow distillation in tall copper stills and pristine water drawn from local estate springs. Renowned for its commitment to natural color and bespoke sherry oak aging, The Glenrothes 42 represents four decades of undisturbed maturation at the estate.

Sensory Profile & Strategy

Master Whisky Maker Tasting Notes
I

Sensory Profile

Nose: Sun-ripened apricot and orange peel, then sugared almond with coriander seed and a cedar edge.
Palate: Creamy vanilla and honeycomb carrying fragrant orange oil, sweet rather than tannic for the age.
Finish: Aromatic and lingering, the fruit outlasting the oak.

II

Strategic Position

Forty-two is an odd number to bottle at, and that is the point the distillery makes: the whisky came out when four particular casks were judged ready rather than when a round age arrived. Whether that is a genuine philosophy or a good line for an odd age statement, the result is a malt at 43% that still tastes of fruit rather than wood, which is not guaranteed after four decades. Beside the 1969 single hogshead from Benromach, a single cask from a distillery that was later dismantled, this one is a marriage from a working estate — the two ends of what very old Speyside can be. the malt collection at Midnight Whiskey carries the rest of the malts and the rest of the Scotch shelf the wider shelf.

Records & Assurance

Production Methodology

The distillery works with tall stills for reflux, short mashing and fermentation, and long distillation — a combination that yields a fruity, delicate new make rather than a heavy one. That character is what makes a forty-two-year-old possible without the wood swallowing it: the spirit went into casks in 1980 and was left on the estate, and the wood involved was sherry-seasoned oak from Jerez with refill casks in the make-up. The exact arrangement is described differently by different sellers — one account has four refill casks married and finished in a single sherry-seasoned cask, another simply four sherry-seasoned refill casks — and no distillery statement settles it, so the page carries both readings rather than picking one.

Authentication & Vault Preservation

Every bottle sold through Midnight Whiskey is sourced as an authentic, sealed product and inspected before it ships. Orders are packed with padded, glass-rated handling and require an adult signature (21+) on delivery; we do not ship to anyone unable to verify legal drinking age. Frequently Asked Questions

How many bottles of The Glenrothes 42 were released?

1,134 bottles worldwide, released in March 2023. It was the first whisky of this age released under the distillery's own name.

What casks was The Glenrothes 42 matured in?

Four casks, filled in 1980 and selected by Master Whisky Maker Laura Rampling. The oak is sherry-seasoned, from Jerez, with refill wood involved — though published accounts differ on whether all four were sherry-seasoned refill casks or whether the marriage finished in a single sherry-seasoned cask.

Is The Glenrothes a Speyside or a Highland whisky?

The distillery stands in Rothes, in the heart of Speyside, and its whiskies are sold as Speyside single malts. The distillery also describes its estate as its Highland home, which is not a contradiction: Speyside sits within the wider Highland area.
