Distillery Origins

This set holds two Suntory single malts under a single SKU: the Yamazaki Smoky Batch The Fourth and the Hakushu Japanese Forest Bittersweet Edition. Both are duty-free bottlings from sibling distilleries, both carry no age statement and both are bottled at 43% — and each is a single-idea whisky that takes its distillery away from its usual register: one built entirely from smoky malt, the other matured entirely in Spanish oak. Suntory did not issue these two as a pack, and the producer’s own launch pairing involved a different Smoky Batch release. This is an assembly by Midnight Whiskey, and it says so.

Nº 01

The Elemental Distinction

01

Two bottles, one SKU: the Yamazaki Smoky Batch The Fourth and the Hakushu Japanese Forest Bittersweet Edition.

02

Mirror-image premises. The Smoky Batch is built only from the smoky malt that normally contributes a trace to Yamazaki; the Bittersweet is built only from Hakushu malt aged in Spanish oak. Each takes a single component and makes it the whole whisky.

03

Sibling distilleries: Yamazaki in Osaka, Japan’s oldest malt distillery, and Hakushu in the forests of Yamanashi — the two malt houses behind the Suntory blends.

04

Matched specifications: both no age statement, both 43% ABV, both 700 mL, both sold through duty-free rather than domestic retail.

05

Not a producer pack. Suntory published no two-bottle set of these; the assembly and the single SKU are Midnight Whiskey’s.

06

The launch pairing belongs to a different bottle. The Bittersweet was released alongside the Smoky Batch The First in late 2023 — not The Fourth — and this page does not borrow that story.

Nº 02

The Two-Bottle Spectrum

Duty-Free Single Malt Pair

These two airport exclusives contrast Yamazaki’s concentrated peat smoke against Hakushu’s forest-born malt matured exclusively in Spanish oak. Together, they represent Suntory’s single-concept cask explorations.

Nº 03

Distillery Heritage & Cask Premise

Suntory Malt Foundations
Yamazaki Malt House

Osaka Valley Origin

Distilled in Japan’s oldest malt distillery in Osaka, capturing peat-smoked malt expression at full focus rather than as a accent note.

Hakushu Forest House

Yamanashi Mountain Origin

Distilled amidst the high-altitude forests of Mount Kaikoma, aged in Spanish oak casks for deep orange marmalade and bittersweet cacao tones.

Matched Specification

43% ABV & 700 mL

Both bottles share identical 43% ABV strength, 700 mL volume, and airport duty-free release distribution across international hubs.

Independent Assembly

Curated Vault Pair

Paired under one SKU by Midnight Whiskey to contrast smoke-focused malt against dark, bittersweet Spanish oak character.

Nº 04

Sensory Profile & Strategy

Contrast & Dialogue
I

Sensory Profile

Two profiles, and the contrast is the reason to own them together: gentle Japanese smokiness on the Yamazaki side against manuka honey, orange marmalade and cacao closing on espresso bitterness on the Hakushu. Each member page carries its own verified notes, and the Smoky Batch The Fourth’s remain an open item there rather than a borrowed set from an earlier release.

II

Strategic Position

A two-bottle SKU earns its place when the bottles argue with each other, and these do — smoke against sherried oak, from the two distilleries that feed the same blends. It gathers the smoke-only Yamazaki of the pair and the Spanish-oak Hakushu of the pair, within the Japanese whisky held at Midnight Whiskey.

Collector Note & Index

Vault Provenance

Duty-Free Channel Sourcing

Duty-free-only bottlings are awkward to assemble after the fact: they never reached domestic shelves, so the supply that exists travelled out of airports one bottle at a time, and matching two of them takes longer than buying either.

Assembly & Condition Integrity

What this set does not do is imply a producer pack that was never issued, or borrow the launch story of a different release — both are stated plainly on this page. Condition of both tubes governs the set the way it governs any pair; neither bottle carries the other.

A verified two-bottle vault assembly providing direct side-by-side comparison of Suntory’s single-concept cask explorations.

Nº 07

Records & Assurance

Production Methodology

Nothing here is new information about either whisky: each bottling’s distillery, cask premise, strength and channel is documented and verified on its own product page, and this set inherits those two records rather than restating them. What the set adds is a statement about itself. Suntory released both bottlings through duty-free rather than domestic retail, but issued no two-bottle pack containing them; the pairing, the single SKU and the price are Midnight Whiskey’s. The producer did release the Hakushu Bittersweet alongside a Yamazaki Smoky Batch — but that was The First, in late 2023, and the Smoky Batch in this set is The Fourth. That distinction is stated rather than blurred, because a launch pairing is a fact about specific bottles and does not transfer to their successors.

Authentication & Vault Preservation

Every bottle sold through Midnight Whiskey is sourced as an authentic, sealed product and inspected before it ships. Orders are packed with padded, glass-rated handling and require an adult signature (21+) on delivery; we do not ship to anyone unable to verify legal drinking age. For our full sourcing and handling protocols, see our editorial and authentication standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this an official Suntory two-bottle set?

No. Suntory sold both bottlings through duty-free channels but published no two-bottle pack containing them, and no set price or set code exists. The pairing and the single SKU are Midnight Whiskey's assembly of two separately released bottles, and the page states that rather than implying producer packaging.

Weren't these two released together?

The Hakushu Japanese Forest Bittersweet Edition was released in late 2023 alongside the Yamazaki Smoky Batch The First. The Smoky Batch in this set is The Fourth, a later release in the same series — so the launch pairing belongs to a different bottle and is not claimed for this set. The two bottles here share a distillery family, a channel and a specification, not a launch.

What do the two bottles have in common?

Both come from Suntory's two malt distilleries — Yamazaki and Hakushu — both are duty-free bottlings rather than domestic releases, both carry no age statement, and both are bottled at 43% in 700 mL. Each is also a single-idea whisky: one built entirely from smoky malt, the other matured entirely in Spanish oak.
