Four Roses releases one Limited Edition Small Batch each fall. The 2024 release is the seventeenth in the series and continues Brent Elliott's tenure as the architect of the blend.
The 2024 blend draws from four of the distillery's ten proprietary recipes. Four Roses recipe codes follow a four-letter convention — the first and third letters (O, S) are fixed, denoting Lawrenceburg distillation and straight whiskey. The second letter identifies the mash bill: B is the high-rye mash (60% corn, 35% rye, 5% malted barley); E is the lower-rye mash (75% corn, 20% rye, 5% malted barley). The fourth letter identifies the yeast strain — V (delicate fruit), K (slight spice), F (herbal).
The composition is as follows:
-
39% — 16-year OESF
-
31% — 12-year OBSV
-
23% — 15-year OESK
-
7% — 20-year OBSV
The 20-year OBSV component is the oldest stock used in any Four Roses Limited Edition to date. Barrels were drawn from the lower tiers of the rickhouses, where slower temperature cycling produces more restrained oak extraction at extended age. Bottled at 108.2 proof, non-chill-filtered.
The 2024 vs. 2023 Evolution
While the 135th Anniversary (2023) release was defined by the inclusion of ultra-aged 25-year stocks, the 2024 Limited Edition (17th Release) shifts the focus toward structural complexity and recipe diversity.
-
The 20-Year Factor: The 2024 release utilizes a 20-year OBSV component to anchor the mid-palate, whereas the 2023 release leaned on OESV for a brighter, more floral profile.
-
Yield: Production increased slightly to approximately 16,680 bottles in 2024, compared to the 15,060 bottles of the 2023 edition.
-
Proof Profile: At 108.2 proof, the 2024 release carries a slightly higher intensity than the 108 proof of the previous year.
Sensory Profile
-
Nose: Caramel apple, milk chocolate, plum. Allspice and floral honey develop with time in the glass. Oak is present but integrated.
-
Palate: Honey and stone fruit on entry. Mid-palate carries raspberry, dark chocolate, and vanilla cream. The OESF herbal character provides a cooling counterpoint.
-
Finish: Long. Candied berry, cinnamon, and a closing note of barrel char and clove.
