Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Cured Oak returned in May 2026 as a 10-year, 100-proof Bottled-in-Bond Kentucky straight bourbon from Buffalo Trace Distillery, aged in barrels built from oak staves air-dried for 13 months — more than double the distillery's standard curing window — and released once rather than annually.

The Elemental Distinction

  • Barrel staves air-dried for 13 months before coopering; Buffalo Trace's standard cure runs about six
  • 10-year age statement, bottled at 100 proof under the Bottled-in-Bond Act
  • First Cured Oak bottling since the 2015 original
  • One-time 2026 offering, allocated nationally through Sazerac's retailer, bar, and restaurant network

Sensory Profile

Nose: Tobacco leaf and dried fruit over vanilla, with seasoned oak underneath.

Palate: Toffee, vanilla, and dark dried fruit set against a firm frame of oak.

Finish: Long and dry, led by the seasoned-oak character Buffalo Trace calls out in its release notes.

Strategic Position

Cured Oak sits apart from the recurring Taylor calendar: Buffalo Trace brought it back in 2026 as a one-off while the 2026 Four Grain bottled alongside it took the annual slot. National distribution through Sazerac's network puts bottles into retail, bar, and restaurant channels rather than gift-shop-only allocation. It anchors the oak-driven end of the straight bourbon library at Midnight Whiskey.

Collector Note

The original Cured Oak shipped in 2015 with a 17-year age statement, then disappeared from the lineup for more than a decade. The 2026 edition is its own bottling — 10 years old, with the same 13-month stave signature — and Buffalo Trace has said the age was chosen for balance rather than to match the original. On our shelves it reads as provenance kin to the 15-year Antique Collection Taylor, the brand's 2025 Antique Collection debut.

Recommended Serving

Pour it neat in a tulip or Glencairn glass; at 100 proof it takes a few drops of water without thinning, which loosens the vanilla and dried fruit from the oak.

Production Methodology

Cooperages air-dry, or cure, oak staves outdoors before barrels are raised, seasoning the wood that will sit against the spirit for a decade. Buffalo Trace cures most of its staves for roughly six months; for Cured Oak the staves dried for 13 months before coopering, and master distiller Harlen Wheatley credits that extended cure for the deeper, longer oak character of the finished bourbon. As a Bottled-in-Bond release it comes from one distillery and one distilling season, aged at least four years under federal bond and bottled at exactly 100 proof.

Authentication & Vault Preservation

Every bottle sold through Midnight Whiskey is sourced as an authentic, sealed product and inspected before it ships. Orders are packed with padded, glass-rated handling and require an adult signature (21+) on delivery; we do not ship to anyone unable to verify legal drinking age. For our full sourcing and handling protocols, see our editorial and authentication standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the 2026 E.H. Taylor Cured Oak different from the 2015 release?

The 2015 Cured Oak carried a 17-year age statement; the 2026 edition is a separate 10-year bottling. Both share the defining 13-month stave cure and the 100-proof Bottled-in-Bond format, and Buffalo Trace released the 2026 version as a one-time offering rather than an annual one.

What does 'cured oak' mean on the E.H. Taylor label?

Curing is the outdoor air-drying of oak staves before they are raised into barrels. E.H. Taylor Cured Oak uses staves dried for 13 months — more than twice Buffalo Trace's roughly six-month standard — which changes what the wood contributes to the bourbon during aging.

What proof is the 2026 E.H. Taylor Cured Oak?

The 2026 E.H. Taylor Cured Oak is bottled at 100 proof, or 50% ABV, as the Bottled-in-Bond Act requires. It carries a 10-year age statement.
