Benromach 50 Years Old is a single-cask Speyside malt filled in 1969 and bottled in June 2019 after half a century in one refill ex-sherry hogshead. What makes it unusual is not the age but the provenance: the distillery was mothballed in 1983 and stripped of its equipment, then bought by Gordon & MacPhail in 1993 and rebuilt with new, smaller stills. This whisky was made by a distillery that no longer physically exists. It is presented in a hand-crafted glass decanter inside a bespoke oak case.

Nº 01

The Elemental Distinction

01

A single cask — one refill ex-sherry hogshead, filled in 1969 and emptied fifty years later.

02

Bottled in June 2019, at natural cask strength with nothing added and nothing cut.

03

Distilled decades before Gordon & MacPhail bought the site in 1993, under the ownership that mothballed it in 1983 and removed the equipment.

04

The stills that made this spirit are gone; the distillery working today was rebuilt around new, smaller ones.

05

Presented in a hand-crafted glass decanter within a bespoke oak case, in 700 ml.

Benromach & Pre-Closure Heritage

Historic 1960s Distillation Legacy

Founded in 1898 in Forres, Benromach produces classic Speyside single malts marked by subtle peat smoke and sherry oak richness. Mothballed in 1983 and stripped of its equipment, the distillery was rescued and rebuilt by Gordon & MacPhail in 1993. This 1969 vintage captures the lost liquid character of the original pre-closure distillery equipment.

Sensory Profile & Strategy

Distillery Tasting Notes
I

Sensory Profile

Nose: Sweet sherry first — prune syrup and stewed raisin over brown sugar, with warm spice building behind.
Palate: Butterscotch and candied orange peel with ginger cutting through, the sherry weight holding without heaviness.
Finish: Long, closing on gentle smoke — the trace of peat that marks this distillery's older spirit.

II

Strategic Position

Fifty-year-old Scotch is usually sold on the age. The interesting claim here is narrower and more verifiable: this liquid was made under an owner that closed the distillery in 1983 and carried the equipment away to other sites, and the operation running today was rebuilt from scratch by a different company. Whatever is in the cask cannot be made again, not because the recipe was lost but because the plant was dismantled. Set against the sherry-cask thirty from Speyside, a modern thirty-year built from a chosen parcel of sherry casks, this is the opposite kind of object — a survivor rather than a selection. the single malt shelf holds the rest of the malts and our Scotch holdings the wider Scotch shelf.

Production Methodology

Benromach opened in 1898 and spent most of the twentieth century changing hands, ending up with the drinks group that mothballed it in 1983 and stripped the site for parts. It sat silent for a decade. Gordon & MacPhail, the Elgin bottler, bought it in 1993, installed new and smaller stills, and restarted production with a deliberately old-fashioned Speyside style — richer spirit with a light touch of peat, a profile that had largely disappeared from the region. This cask predates all of that. It was filled in 1969, sat through the closure, and was bottled fifty years later from the single refill sherry hogshead it had spent its whole life in — at whatever strength the cask gave, with nothing added.

Authentication & Vault Preservation

Every bottle sold through Midnight Whiskey is sourced as an authentic, sealed product and inspected before it ships. Orders are packed with padded, glass-rated handling and require an adult signature (21+) on delivery; we do not ship to anyone unable to verify legal drinking age. For our full sourcing and handling protocols, see our editorial and authentication standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Benromach 50 Years Old a single cask whisky?

Yes. This bottling comes from one refill ex-sherry hogshead, filled in 1969 and emptied fifty years later, and was bottled at natural cask strength.

Has Benromach released more than one 50 Year Old?

Yes, and they are different whiskies. This is the 1969 vintage, bottled in 2019 from a single hogshead. A later fifty-year-old followed from a different fill year at a considerably higher strength, in numbered hand-blown decanters. The vintage on the label is what distinguishes them.

Was this whisky distilled by Gordon & MacPhail?

No. It was filled in 1969, decades before Gordon & MacPhail bought the distillery in 1993. The site was mothballed in 1983 and its equipment removed, so the spirit in this cask was made by a plant that no longer exists.
