2023 Outturn

Eagle Rare 25 is the bottling that opened Buffalo Trace's Warehouse P programme. Released in November 2023 at 101 proof (50.5% ABV) in a run of roughly 200 bottles, it was the first whiskey to come out of the purpose-built experimental warehouse that began operating in December 2022 — built specifically so American whiskey could pass two decades without drying out. The crystal decanter is wrapped in a hand-hammered sterling silver wing marking the twenty-fifth, or silver, anniversary in barrel, with a glass eagle set inside the bottle.

Nº 01

The Elemental Distinction

01

The first release from Warehouse P, the experimental warehouse that began operating in December 2022; the thirty-year followed as the second, three years later.

02

Roughly 200 bottles, 750 ml, released globally from November 2023 to selected retailers, bars and restaurants.

03

Bottled at 101 proof (50.5% ABV) — the strength the brand uses across its aged expressions.

04

The wing encasing the decanter is hand-hammered sterling silver for the silver anniversary; the later thirty-year uses gold plate for the same reason at a different number.

05

Buffalo Trace's own page still calls it the oldest expression in the range, which was true at release and stopped being true in 2026.

Buffalo Trace & Inaugural Warehouse P Heritage

Inaugural Landmark in Kentucky Maturation

Distilled at Buffalo Trace Distillery along the Kentucky River in Frankfort, Eagle Rare 25 stands as the inaugural triumph of Warehouse P—the distillery's $20 million climate-controlled experimental aging sanctuary. Constructed to overcome the destructive evaporation and harsh wood tannic extraction typical of quarter-century Kentucky aging, Warehouse P preserves liquid nuance through exact temperature and humidity control.

Craftsmanship & Cask Architecture

Quarter-Century Controlled Wood Science
25-Year Microclimate Aging

Warehouse P Prototype

Aged twenty-five years with modulated airflow, preventing the aggressive oak astringency common in ultra-aged Kentucky bourbons.

Sterling Silver Casing

Hand-Hammered Silver Wing

Encased in custom hand-blown crystal with an intricate hand-hammered sterling silver wing celebrating the silver anniversary.

Low-Rye Mash Bill #1

Corn-Dominant Core

Distilled from Buffalo Trace's low-rye recipe, balancing stewed cherry, nutmeg, vanilla, and dark chocolate richness.

200-Bottle Debut

Historic Inaugural Outturn

Only ~200 bottles yielded from the debut 2023 release, establishing it as one of the rarest modern American whiskey bottlings.

Sensory Profile & Strategy

Master Distiller Tasting Notes
I

Sensory Profile

Nose: Dusty oak and old leather first, then stewed cherry with clove and nutmeg, dark chocolate shavings and a powdered-sugar sweetness behind.
Palate: Vanilla and butterscotch against dark fruit, with a tobacco-and-menthol turn and just enough tannin to remind you of the age.
Finish: Very long, on rickhouse floor, baking spice and black pepper — dry at the edges without tipping into astringency.

II

Strategic Position

This is the bottle that proved the method. Kentucky's climate makes twenty-five-year bourbon a gamble — evaporation climbs and extraction turns aggressive — and Warehouse P was built to control both; this was the first thing to come out of it, which is why it matters beyond its age. the thirty-year that followed it out of the same warehouse is the sequel and the comparison: same warehouse, same strength, five more years, and a gold wing instead of a silver one. Against the annual seventeen-year from the Antique Collection, the annual seventeen from conventional rickhouses, the difference is the building rather than the recipe. All three sit within our bourbon holdings.

Records & Assurance

Production Methodology

Buffalo Trace ran its ageing experiments for years before building somewhere to hold them. Warehouse P, operating from December 2022, is one of two purpose-built facilities where temperature and conditions are controlled rather than left to a Kentucky summer — the aim, as Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley put it, being to soften the extraction that usually makes very old bourbon taste dry and over-oaked. This whiskey had already spent most of its life in conventional warehousing before being moved in; when it reached twenty-five years it was proofed down to 101 and otherwise bottled as it came. Reporting at release described a single barrel behind the run, which the distillery has not confirmed in those terms.

Authentication & Vault Preservation

Every bottle sold through Midnight Whiskey is sourced as an authentic, sealed product and inspected before it ships. Orders are packed with padded, glass-rated handling and require an adult signature (21+) on delivery; we do not ship to anyone unable to verify legal drinking age. For our full sourcing and handling protocols, see our editorial and authentication standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bottles of Eagle Rare 25 were made?

The 2023 release was approximately 200 bottles of 750 ml, allocated globally from that November. Buffalo Trace brought the expression back alongside its thirty-year in 2026 and has not published a bottle count for that second release.

Was Eagle Rare 25 released more than once?

Yes. It debuted in November 2023 and returned in 2026 when the distillery launched the thirty-year. The 2023 run is the one with a published figure of roughly 200 bottles, so provenance matters when comparing two bottles.

Why does the Eagle Rare 25 decanter have a silver wing?

Twenty-five years is the silver anniversary, and the wing encasing the crystal decanter is hand-hammered sterling silver to mark it. The thirty-year that followed uses a gold-plated wing on the same design language.
