Forty years is where most Scotch either dries out or fades below cask strength, and 48.1% at that age is the number worth noticing — it says the casks held their grip rather than giving the whisky away. The collection it anchors was also a statement of inventory: six bottles up to seventy-eight years, released at once, which no other distillery was in a position to do. Production Methodology

The whisky was laid down in sherry-seasoned oak and left, which at The Macallan means casks seasoned to order in Spain rather than bought second-hand — the distillery's long-standing argument is that wood, not distillation, does most of the work. Four decades of it produced both the colour and the strength here: nothing was added to darken the whisky, and the spirit still came out at 48.1%, which is unusually high for the age and points to casks that held rather than leaked. Bottling took place in 2020 alongside the other five whiskies in the collection, each finished by hand with its own year, number and strength.
