FUJI 30 Years Aged Single Grain is a Japanese grain whisky from Kirin's Mt. Fuji Distillery at Gotemba, Shizuoka, bottled at 46% ABV (92 proof). Master Blender Jota Tanaka assembled it from grain whiskies aged past thirty years, with some components running to forty, all distilled in the distillery's kettle-and-column configuration — the medium, Canadian-style grain the site makes alongside heavier American-style and lighter Scottish-style grain. Maturation was entirely in first- and second-fill American white oak bourbon barrels. It was named World's Best Grain Whisky at the 2020 World Whiskies Awards, and reached the United States in a run of one hundred bottles in 2022.

Nº 01

The Elemental Distinction

01

Grain whisky aged over thirty years, with components in the blend running up to forty years in oak.

02

Bottled at 46% ABV — 92 proof — after maturation entirely in first- and second-fill American white oak bourbon barrels.

03

Distilled in a batch kettle-and-column configuration: the medium, Canadian-style grain of the three grain styles Mt. Fuji Distillery makes on one site.

04

Barrels hand-selected by Jota Tanaka, only the second master blender in the distillery's history and a 2022 World Whisky Awards Hall of Fame inductee.

05

One hundred bottles reached the United States in 2022, with a further hundred released in 2023 for the distillery's fiftieth anniversary.

Mt. Fuji Distillery & Jota Tanaka Heritage

Gotemba Single-Estate Craftsmanship

Established in 1973 at the foot of Mt. Fuji in Gotemba, Shizuoka, Mt. Fuji Distillery (Fuji Gotemba) was designed to produce Scottish, American, and Canadian whisky styles under one roof. Guided by Master Blender Jota Tanaka, the distillery utilizes fifty-year-old snowmelt aquifer water to create single-estate grain whiskies of extraordinary depth and clarity.

Nº 03

Sensory Profile & Strategy

Master Blender Tasting Notes
I

Sensory Profile

Nose: Brown sugar syrup and toasted hazelnut, with ripe orchard fruit turning towards raisin and a soft polished-oak edge.
Palate: Honeyed and concentrated, cocoa and dark caramel over baked apple, the weight arriving without heat.
Finish: Moderately long and woody in the way old grain goes woody — dry, resinous, more sandalwood than tannin.

II

Strategic Position

Grain whisky is the category the collector market has spent decades ignoring, and this is the bottle that made the argument against that: it took World's Best Grain Whisky at the 2020 World Whiskies Awards and the trophy at that year's International Spirits Challenge, in its first year of release. What makes it possible is structural — Mt. Fuji Distillery makes three grain styles and malt on one site, so a thirty-year single grain here is a single-estate whisky rather than a bought-in parcel. Beside the 40-year Suntory blend on the same shelf it marks the two poles of aged Japanese whisky, a Suntory blend built on malt against a Kirin grain built on corn, with the duty-free Hibiki 12 sitting a tier below both.

Vault Provenance

100-Bottle Allocation Tracking

The number that matters is one hundred — the size of the first United States allocation, released in 2022, with a second hundred following in 2023 for the distillery's fiftieth anniversary. Keep the carton; on a run this small it is part of the identification.

Production Methodology

Mt. Fuji Distillery was built at the foot of the mountain in the early 1970s to make Scottish, American and Canadian whisky styles under one roof, and it remains the unusual case: malt plus three distinct grain styles on a single site. This whisky comes from the middle of those three, the Canadian style, distilled in a batch kettle-and-column arrangement from American corn with Scottish barley. Everything then went into American white oak bourbon barrels, first and second fill only, and stayed there past thirty years — some of it closer to forty. Jota Tanaka selected the barrels individually. The water is Mt. Fuji snowmelt drawn from the aquifer beneath the distillery, which the house dates at roughly fifty years underground before it is used.

Authentication & Vault Preservation

Every bottle sold through Midnight Whiskey is sourced as an authentic, sealed product and inspected before it ships. Orders are packed with padded, glass-rated handling and require an adult signature (21+) on delivery; we do not ship to anyone unable to verify legal drinking age. For our full sourcing and handling protocols, see our editorial and authentication standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is FUJI 30 Year a single malt or a grain whisky?

It is a single grain whisky — made from corn and barley rather than malted barley alone, and distilled in a kettle-and-column configuration rather than pot stills. Single grain means all of it comes from one distillery, in this case Mt. Fuji Distillery at Gotemba.

How old is the whisky in FUJI 30 Years Aged Single Grain?

The label states thirty years, which is the age of the youngest whisky in the blend. Components running up to forty years are reported in the mix, and every barrel was selected by Master Blender Jota Tanaka.

How many bottles of FUJI 30 Year Single Grain came to the United States?

One hundred bottles were allocated to the United States in 2022, and a further hundred were released in 2023 to mark the distillery's fiftieth anniversary.
