Colonel E.H. Taylor Jr. built the Old Fashioned Copper Distillery in 1870 around copper — stills, piping, fermenters — because copper strips the compounds that make new spirit harsh. The series named for it puts copper back on the outside: real copper lettering inlaid into hand-cut crystal, and a copper plaque on the box carrying the year. The whiskey is drawn from barrels filled in that stated year, held until the distillery decides they are ready, and bottled at 90 proof without an age statement — the fill date does that job instead.

Why were O.F.C. Vintages given to charities?

Buffalo Trace launched the series in autumn 2016 by giving two hundred bottles free of charge to United States non-profit organisations, on the condition they be used for fundraising. Those bottles raised close to $1.2 million at auction. Later vintages have also been offered for sale.

Does O.F.C. Vintage 2004 have an age statement?

No. The series is vintage-dated to the year of distillation rather than age-stated, so the label gives 2004 as a fill year and leaves the maturation period to be worked out from the release date.
