O.F.C. Vintage 2004 comes from a series that was not built to be sold. When Buffalo Trace launched the O.F.C. Vintages in autumn 2016, the first two hundred bottles went free of charge to United States non-profits, on the condition that they be used for fundraising; those bottles raised close to $1.2 million at charity auction. Later vintages have reached the public through sale, but the charity route remains part of how these bottles move. This one is bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV) in hand-cut crystal with copper lettering.

Nº 01

The Elemental Distinction

01

From a series launched in autumn 2016 with two hundred bottles given free to United States non-profits for fundraising — 100 from 1980, 50 from 1982 and 50 from 1983.

02

Those first bottles raised nearly $1.2 million at charity auction, across causes from cancer services to veterans' support.

03

Distilled in 2004; the series is vintage-dated to the fill year, so no age statement appears on the label.

04

Bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV) in hand-cut crystal with inlaid copper lettering.

05

Later vintages have been offered for sale as well as donated, which is how bottles like this one reach a shelf at all.

Old Fashioned Copper Distillery Heritage

Historic Colonel E.H. Taylor Legacy

Named in honor of the Old Fashioned Copper Distillery founded by Colonel E.H. Taylor Jr. in 1870, this vintage collection pays homage to the historic Frankfort site now known as Buffalo Trace Distillery. Conceived as both a philanthropic initiative and a historic showcase, each release represents a single distillation year preserved within collector-grade archive crystal.

Sensory Profile & Strategy

Distillery Tasting Notes
I

Sensory Profile

Nose: Butterscotch and brown sugar with cherry underneath, oak arriving late rather than leading.
Palate: Toasted caramel and cinnamon over seasoned oak, rounder than the strength suggests.
Finish: Coffee and herbs against oak, long without turning tannic.

II

Strategic Position

The distribution model is the unusual thing about this series, and it shapes what a bottle on a shelf actually is. These were conceived as fundraising instruments — given away, auctioned, and only later sold — so provenance chains are more varied here than for an allocated release. Sitting between the 1996 fill, eight years earlier and the 2006 fill, released in 2025 in fill order, the 2004 is the middle of the three years held here. The rest of the bourbon shelf is in the bourbon pages at Midnight Whiskey.

Production Methodology

Colonel E.H. Taylor Jr. built the Old Fashioned Copper Distillery in 1870 around copper — stills, piping, fermenters — because copper strips the compounds that make new spirit harsh. The series named for it puts copper back on the outside: real copper lettering inlaid into hand-cut crystal, and a copper plaque on the box carrying the year. The whiskey is drawn from barrels filled in that stated year, held until the distillery decides they are ready, and bottled at 90 proof without an age statement — the fill date does that job instead.

Authentication & Vault Preservation

Every bottle sold through Midnight Whiskey is sourced as an authentic, sealed product and inspected before it ships. Orders are packed with padded, glass-rated handling and require an adult signature (21+) on delivery; we do not ship to anyone unable to verify legal drinking age. For our full sourcing and handling protocols, see our editorial and authentication standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why were O.F.C. Vintages given to charities?

Buffalo Trace launched the series in autumn 2016 by giving two hundred bottles free of charge to United States non-profit organisations, on the condition they be used for fundraising. Those bottles raised close to $1.2 million at auction. Later vintages have also been offered for sale.

Does O.F.C. Vintage 2004 have an age statement?

No. The series is vintage-dated to the year of distillation rather than age-stated, so the label gives 2004 as a fill year and leaves the maturation period to be worked out from the release date.

What strength is O.F.C. Vintage 2004?

Ninety proof, which is 45% ABV — the standard bottling strength for this series rather than a figure chosen for the individual vintage.
